The Feminism and Folklore 2023 event on Kashmiri Wikipedia, organized by the Kashmiri Wikimedians User Group in partnership with the International Feminism and Folklore team, was a significant initiative aimed at bridging the gender content gap on Wikipedia while preserving and celebrating global folklore. This edit-a-thon took place from February 1 to April 15, 2023, offering editors an opportunity to contribute to the creation and expansion of content related to women, feminism, and folklore on the Kashmiri Wikipedia platform.
Throughout the duration of the event, participants worked passionately to build a repository of articles that spotlighted various aspects of women’s roles in folklore, cultural traditions, and narratives within the Kashmiri context. This collaborative editing marathon yielded the creation of 97 articles, of which 71 were carefully reviewed, refined, and ultimately accepted into the main Wikipedia space. Each article was crafted to adhere to Wikipedia’s standards, ensuring that the information presented was accurate, well-researched, and verifiable.
The Feminism and Folklore initiative is widely celebrated across multiple languages on Wikipedia, underscoring the importance of recognizing and documenting the contributions and experiences of women, which are often underrepresented in traditional historical records and narratives. By organizing this event, the Kashmiri Wikimedians User Group contributed to a broader global movement, amplifying the voices and stories of women through the lens of folklore and cultural heritage in the Kashmiri language.
This event not only helped enrich Kashmiri Wikipedia but also fostered a sense of community among participants, who shared a collective goal of bringing greater visibility to women’s stories and folklore. Through this edit-a-thon, Kashmiri Wikipedia grew as a resource for readers and researchers interested in feminist perspectives and folklore, bridging cultural and linguistic divides and encouraging further exploration of Kashmiri heritage.
